Telephone Wiring Basics

Blog

Having a telephone system wired into your home is still essential for most homeowners. It is possible to wire your own telephone as long as you understand the basic principles. This means that you need to be familiar with all components of a telephone system including all cords, wires and jacks. Before you begin wiring your telephone system in your home or office, there are few things that you need to understand and consider.

Evaluate Floor Plan

The first thing that you need to consider when you are going to wire your telephone system is what location is best. This means that you need to begin by mapping out the entire floor plan in your home. This means that you need to see where the current jacks are installed and where the new location for jacks within your home should be. The location of the jacks that you will be using will influence the method that you choose for wiring your telephone.

Two Methods

When you are looking to wire your telephone system, you essentially have two different wiring methods that you can choose from. Daisy-chain wiring is a popular option that involves connecting numerous telephone outlets to a single circuit. This means that you start wiring at the junction for the service provider and run this wire from jack to jack. This is a method of wiring that is designed to be simple and less time consuming. Home-run wiring is the other method that you can choose, but it involves connecting all jacks individually. This means that the jacks are individually connected to the wire junction. This means that home-run wiring is a longer process and requires more effort. However, home-run wiring allows for easy troubleshooting when dealing with wiring issues and allows for upgrades on your wiring to be completed much faster.

Safety Tips

When you are going to be wiring the telephone system within your home, you need to be sure that safety is maintained at all times. This means that you need to always deactivate a phone line before you begin the wiring process. It is possible that if the phone would ring while you were wiring, a shock could charge through the line and cause injury. This can all be avoided by simply deactivating the phone line before you begin. It is also important to always handle the wiring at the insulated side. There are even insulated wiring tools that you can use for added safety protection.

If you feel you cannot accomplish this task, then don't hesitate in calling in professionals, like those at Austec Electrical, to assist you.
